Nestlé shows interest in cultured meat market as it collaborates with start-up Future Meat Technologies

Nestlé is looking at expanding its sustainable alternative protein market by collaborating with cultured meat start-up Future Meat Technologies.

The Swiss consumer goods giant has announced that it’s exploring emerging technologies to produce environmentally friendly proteins and cultured meat ingredients.
The company is working with a number of partners and start-ups to tap into this new market and is directly working with Future Meat Technologies at their laboratory facilities in Lausanne.

Reinhard Behringer, Head of the Nestlé Institute of Material Sciences at Nestlé Research, comments: “For many years we have been investing in our protein expertise and the development of proprietary technologies for plant-based meat alternatives, allowing us to continuously expand our wide range of tasty and nutritious products with a lower environmental impact. To complement these efforts, we’re also exploring technologies that could lead to animal-friendly alternatives that are nutritious, sustainable, and close to meat in terms of taste, flavor, and texture. We are excited to understand their potential.”

With a rise in awareness in animal welfare, sustainability and our current food system stability, Nestlé is looking at expanding its non animal based meat and dairy product range and cater for a growing number of vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians.
“Providing people with delicious, nutritious, and sustainable plant-based products is a priority for Nestlé”, states the company in a press release.

Nestlé, who recently launched a vegan version of their popular Kit Kat chocolate fingers, also makes a plant-based version of Carnation Condensed Milk and a plant-based meat range, Garden Gourmet. The company also unveiled a tuna alternative, currently only available in Swiss supermarkets.
